The enTourage pocket eDGe is a combined tablet computer and e-book reader made by enTourage Systems Inc. It is called by the manufacturer as the world's first mini-dualbook".
Build & Design
The Pocket eDGe is a dual screen device. One screen is a touch-sensitive 6.0 inch E Ink display, while the other screen is a full color 7.0 inch LCD touch screen. The color display side runs Android. Unlike most android devices, entourage pocket edge has its own suite of applications, rather than using the Android Market. Both displays are touchscreens, and the interface of the device provides interaction between the two according to appropriate actions and data formats.
The two connected screens of the Pocket eDGe include a 6-inch e-ink Wacom tablet on the left, and a 7-inch (800x480) resistive LCD touch screen on the right. Like the original eDGe, the Pocket version includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi b/g, and USB sync and host ports. You also get a microSD memory slot to expand on the 3GB of internal memory, built-in microphone, and built-in 2 megapixel camera capable of video and stills.
The Pocket Edge measures 1 inch thick when closed. The unique hinge holding the screens together rotates 360 degrees, allowing the device to fold down with the screens facing inward or outward.
When closed, the Pocket eDGe looks like a miniature laptop computer. It isn't until you open the device that you see how unique it is, with an eInk screen on one side and a color touchscreen LCD display on the other. The screens face each other like the facing pages of a book. The hinge is sturdy and allows you to open the Pocket eDGe like a traditional laptop, bend the screen back so that the device can be propped up like a greeting card, or fold it all the way back so that you can only see one of the two screens.
At 1.35 pounds the Pocket eDGe has a good weight to it, but it isn't too heavy. You won't be sticking it in your pocket, though it should fit easily into gear bags or even larger purses.
The LCD is bright and colorful, and of good quality. It is very responsive to touch and a pleasant surprise. You can use the included stylus if you like, but it isn't strictly necessary on the tablet side of Pocket eDGe.
The eInk display is crisp, with very good contrast. You have to use the stylus with the eInk screen.
PERFORMANCE:
The Pocket eDGe is based on a 1 GHz processor, and is quite speedy. It isn't blow-your-socks off fast, but it is responsive to every touch, and never had to wait more than a few seconds for an app to load. Even games that rely on fast input work well.
Since it's based on the Android operating system, it is easy to use and should feel familiar to anyone who has ever used an Android phone. The home screen is well organized, with quick links to the most used apps, plus a special Pocket eDGe menu at the bottom to access eBooks, the web browser, and email. The Library is where you'll find all of your files. The Pocket eDGe supports a good variety of formats, including ePub and PDF eBooks, AAC, Ogg, MP3, and WAV music, and AVI, MOV, and WAV music files.
Wireless
The Pocket eDGe has built-in Wi-Fi wireless networking and it works perfectly on both my home and office networks. Bluetooth is also included, and it works just as expected.
Productivity
The Pocket eDGe is meant to be more of a personal companion than a true productivity tool, but it's still possible to get some work done with the device. It comes with Documents to Go, which allows you to view and edit Microsoft Office files. It will allow you to view word processing documents and spreadsheets and make small changes as necessary.
The email app is K-9, which is an open source client. It supports IMAP and works very well. The web browser also works well, even with complicated sites.
Other productivity apps include an alarm clock, audio recorder, calculator, calendar, contacts, a dictionary, notepad, and a personal journal app. The calendar works with your handwriting, so if you would rather scrawl than type you're in luck. It also works as a shopping list and to-do list manager, and includes highlighting tools and options to make the calendar seem very much like an old-fashioned day planner. I had a lot of fun with the calendar app; my only disappointment was that the month view on the calendar didn't offer any detail at all, so that I had to tap on individual days to see what was going on.
Entertainment
Whether you want to read an eBook, listen to music, watch videos, or play a game from the Android Market, the Pocket eDGe has you covered. The reading experience is not as fast or as polished as a Kindle or nook, but still very nice. The LCD turns off when you're reading a book to save on battery life. Page turns are pretty fast, and the text is easy to read thanks to the high contrast eInk display. Annotation and highlighting are acceptable, though as mentioned above, the lack of responsiveness to the stylus on the eInk side of the Pocket eDGe had me longing for the five-way navigator on a Kindle or the secondary LCD navigation screen on my nook.
The Tube video player--looks great, with excellent video quality. Loading times were fairly long, but the experience was still a good one. You can search for videos by topic or use the quick link page for access to videos by category, most watched, highest rating, etc. The included music player is also as expected, with the ability to choose your music by artist, song, or album, or create your own custom playlists.
Whether you're watching videos or listening to music, you'll be glad to know that the external speaker is excellent, with great sound quality even at high volume. At the highest setting the volume can get quite loud, so you can easily share your favorite music or the latest video with your friends and family.
The gaming experience is also a good one. The Pocket eDGe comes with ArtfulBits aiMinesweeper and Frozen Bubble, both fun games that give an idea of what the device is capable of in the gaming department. I also downloaded PaintBall2, a match three bubble popping game, and it ran very smoothly, with great graphics and sound. Camera
The two megapixel camera is able to take still photos or capture video clips up to one minute in length. It is nice to have to capture those moments you might otherwise have missed.
